Vowel Reduction in Russian

Look at the word молоко (milk). It has three O’s. Say it out loud the way it’s spelled, and you’d expect “mo-lo-KO.”

But that’s not how Russian-speakers say it. It actually sounds like muh-luh-KO.

Only one of those three O’s actually sounds like “O.” The other two change completely. It’s a rule in Russian called vowel reduction.

What Vowel Reduction Is

Vowel reduction is a simple idea: in Russian, only the stressed syllable in a word gets its full, clear vowel sound. Every other vowel in the word gets weaker.

“Weaker” means the vowel sound gets shorter and less distinct.

Take молоко again:

  • The stress falls on the last syllable: молоко́
  • That stressed “о” keeps its full, clear “o” sound
  • The other two O’s are unstressed, so they weaken and they don’t sound like “o” at all

This is why the spelling and the pronunciation don’t match. The letters stay the same. The sound depends on whether that letter is in the stressed syllable or not.

The Core Rule

If a vowel is stressed, it’s clear.
If it’s not stressed, it’s reduced.

This rule applies mainly to О, Е, and Я. Other vowels (А, У, Ы, И) barely change, but keep it for later.

О Reduction

Stressed О – clear “o” sound.
до́м – “dom”

Unstressed О – reduced. It doesn’t sound like “o” anymore — it shifts toward “a” or a weak “uh.”

Example: молоко́ (milk)

  • м-о– unstressed → weak “uh”
  • л-о– unstressed → “uh”
  • к-о́– stressed → clear “o”

Sounds like: muh-luh-KO

Е Reduction

Stressed Е – clear “ye” or “eh” sound.
не́т – “nyet”

Unstressed Е – reduced. It shifts toward a short “ee” sound.

Example: теле́фон (phone)

  • т-е- unstressed → “ee”
  • л-е- unstressed → “ee”
  • ф-о́-н stressed → clear “o”

Sounds like: tee-lee-FON

Я Reduction

Stressed Я – clear “ya” sound.
Мя́со – “MYAsa”

Unstressed Я – reduced. It shifts toward a short “yee” (if it’s in the beginning or after a soft/hard sign) or “ee” sound (like Е).

Example: язы́к (language)

  • я- unstressed → “yee”
  • з-ы́-к stressed → clear “ы”

Sounds like: yee-ZYK

А, У, Ы, И — The Stable Vowels

These four vowels don’t really reduce. They keep close to their normal sound whether stressed or not.

  • У → stays “oo” (рука́ → rooKA)
  • Ы → stays “ы” (сыры́ → both Ы’s sound almost the same)
  • И → stays “ee” (си́ний → both И’s sound almost the same)
  • А → stays “a” (рука́ → rooKA)

They just shorten a little when unstressed. You don’t need to think about these four much.

Final Thoughts

The rule is simple: stressed vowels stay clear, unstressed vowels weaken toward “a”/”uh,” or “ee.” Next time you learn a new word, check the stress mark first, then say the word out loud.

Do this with every new word and it becomes automatic. If you want to practice with a native speaker and get feedback, email us ↓
